Why African Youth Are Concerned About EACOP

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), a 1,443 km project from Uganda’s oil fields in Hoima to Tanzania’s port of Tanga is presented as a path to economic growth. Yet, for many communities in Uganda and Tanzania, it raises serious environmental and social concerns.
Across Africa, climate change is already disrupting lives through droughts, floods, crop losses, and biodiversity decline. EACOP risks adding to these challenges. The route passes through sensitive ecosystems, wetlands, and wildlife habitats, potentially affecting water sources and the livelihoods of millions.

Human Impact
Many households have been affected by land acquisition for the project. In some cases, compensation processes have been slow or incomplete, leaving communities in uncertainty. Lessons from earlier oil projects show that unresolved grievances can persist for years, as seen in the experience of the Oil Refinery Residents Association Uganda (watch their story).

The Role of Youth
Young people across Africa are speaking up for sustainable development pathways that protect both people and nature. Our voices call for investment in renewable energy and fair solutions that secure a healthier future for all.
We invite everyone to learn more about EACOP’s potential impacts, reflect on the alternatives, and join the conversation on building a climate-resilient future for Africa.
